“Miller at Forefront of Psychiatric Service Dog Assistance”

Case Western Reserve University AlumNews, 24 March 2010

Not just any dog but a psychiatric service dog. Their work is the subject of a just-published book by Oberlin psychotherapist Jane Miller, MSSA ‘90, who has had dogs assisting her in her practice for about 15 years. In the way guide dogs help the blind, psychiatric service dogs help people with emotional and psychological disorders navigate through life. They’re helping people across the country, including here in the Cleveland area. “My clients wouldn’t be who they are if not for their dogs, says Miller, a clinical psychotherapist and author of “Healing Companions: Ordinary Dogs and Their Extraordinary Power to Transform Lives.” “They’re whole again. The dog gives them the ability to give back and to live full lives, to be fully functioning human beings in society.”

* Mark your calendars. Miller will discuss her book and research as an MSASS Distinguished Lecturer during the university’s Alumni Weekend on Saturday, October 2 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at MSASS.
